An antifungal antibiotic, diflucan is given for people for treating infections related to the fungus in the mouth, lungs, esophagus, throat, lungs, bladder, blood and genital area. The drug is also advised for people having weak immune system that is related bone marrow transplantation and cancer.
Diflucan is available in three forms – Powder, capsule and Tablet. Once the drug has been advised, care should be taken that the complete dosage is taken. A person should not discontinue in the middle of a dosage even if he sees slight improvement in the infection. Discontinuing in the midst of a dosage may not completely treat the infections. Moreover, there is a possibility that the infections may come back after sometime. The medicine should be taken as per the directions. The drug should not be taken in large amounts as it could lead to many complications. The doses are prescribed according to the range of infections.
Diflucan has to be avoided if having allergies to its contents or to other similar medicines like clotrimazole, econazole, ketoconazole, miconazole, sertaconazole, sulconazole, terconazole, tioconazole, and voriconazole. Apart from this, the drug can cause adverse effects if taken along with some medicines. Inform the doctor if you are using warfarin, clopidogrel, cyclosporine, diabetes medicine, rifabutin, rifampin, diazepam, lorazepam, alprazolam, midazolam, phenytoin, tacrolimus, theophylline and others. In case a person is using these drugs, there is a possibility that the doctor may change the dosage or he may prescribe an alternative to Diflucan.
There are several health conditions in which Diflucan is not prescribed or the dosage is altered. The conditions such as liver disease, kidney, disorder of heart rhythms, history of Long QT syndrome need to be known to he doctor before he prescribes Diflucan. A person having AIDS or HIV should have to take with caution as some side effects could be augmented. A person having Electrolyte problems should also avoid the drug.
Though it is not yet proved if Diflucan is harmful to the newborn kid, it is advised to talk about all the risks and complications involved with the drug during pregnancy. Breast-feeding mothers should also take this drug with care.
After taking Diflucan, a person should not drive or do any hard work as the drug is known to cause dizziness. When using Diflucan, a person should never miss the routine lab tests as it is needed for an evaluation of the condition of various organs, especially liver and kidney.
Now talking of the Diflucan side effects, the serious ones include nausea, low fever, stomachache, appetite loss, dark urine, jaundice, clay-colored stools, chills, body pain, flu, blistering, rashes, peeling, bruising, unusual weakness and seizure.
The lesser side effects of Diflucan include vomiting, mild nausea, diarrhea, stomach upset, headache, unpleasant taste in mouth, dizziness, itching and skin rashes.
In case, a person does not see improvement in the infections or if the symptoms get worsen, it is better to contact the physician. The doctor may go for dosage change or may even advise some other anti-fungal drug.
